Webinar series ‘How to conduct and publish excellent research on traffic safety’—part 5
Have you ever wondered why some research papers are a pleasure to read, while others—far too many—feel like uninspired by-products of today's ‘publish or perish’ culture?
At Traffic Safety Research (TSR), our editorial team is committed to publishing the former: research that is engaging, meaningful, and impactful. As researchers and authors, we believe you share that goal. But what sets excellent research apart? And how can you plan for success from the very beginning?
To help answer these questions, the TSR has launched a new webinar series: ‘How to conduct and publish excellent research on traffic safety’. In this series, we invite leading experts in the field to share their insights, experiences, and advice on what makes research truly valuable—and how to turn it into outstanding publications.
‘The purpose of publication’

Lars Ekman is a traffic safety expert with a long career in the field. He began as a researcher in Professor Christer Hydén’s research group at Lund University, Sweden, where he worked with the Swedish Traffic Conflicts Technique. His own research focused on pedestrian and bicycle safety, particularly in relation to zebra crossings. He spent twenty years at Lund University as both a researcher and a teacher.
His interest in applied research and in improving the traffic environment led him to continue his work at the Swedish Road Authority, which later became the Swedish Transport Administration. Today he is retired, but he remains active in the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC). Within ETSC, he has been involved in the PIN programme and the EU Road Safety Exchange programme. The implementation of Vision Zero has become his main concern in recent years.
